Swordsman / Knight is the premier melee frontline class in Ragnarok: The New World, rated A tier for its unmatched PvP and GvG presence. Knights absorb damage, control crowds with Bowling Bash, and dish out sustained physical DPS once weapon refine and stats scale. Leveling is slower than Wizard or Gunslinger, but endgame guild content heavily rewards Knight investment.
This guide covers Vit versus Str priorities, Bowling Bash skill builds, gear progression, GvG role expectations, and how Job Freedom lets you farm early on a faster class then swap into Knight for war content. See the tier list for current meta placement.
Stat Builds — Vit Knight vs DPS Knight
Vit Knight (GvG frontline): VIT primary for HP pool and damage reduction synergy, STR secondary for Bowling Bash damage, DEX for hit rate. This build stands in chokepoints, absorbs burst, and disrupts enemy healers with crowd control.
DPS Knight (farming): STR primary, AGI secondary for ASPD, VIT in moderate amounts. Clears mobs faster for solo farming but dies faster in organized PvP. Most Job Freedom players farm on Wizard then respec into Vit Knight when guild war schedules start.
Skill Build Priority
Max Bowling Bash for mob clearing and PvP knockback value. Pierce handles large enemies and MVP damage when size modifiers favor it. One-hand Quicken or parry skills depend on your weapon choice—sword and board for defense, two-hand for farming DPS.
Provoke and Endure have situational PvE value on tough maps. In GvG, prioritize crowd control and survival passives over farming utilities. Skill resets are free under Job Freedom, so experiment with Pierce-heavy MVP builds versus Bowling Bash PvP builds before committing endgame stat cards.
Gear and Refine Strategy
Weapon refine matters most—aim for +7 minimum on your main sword before pushing armor. Size modifier cards (Hydra, Skeleton Worker) boost MVP and medium-target farming. GvG sets stack damage reduction, HP percent, and status resistance over pure damage enchants.
Shield cards with race reduction or element resistance define your matchup spread in guild war. Keep multiple shield swaps in inventory. For solo progression before GvG gear arrives, farm with a two-hand STR build and swap equipment when switching between PvE and PvP roles.
GvG Role and Job Freedom Workflow
Knights anchor the front line: push into enemy lines, Bowling Bash clusters apart, and body-block for backline Priests and ranged DPS like Hunter. You win wars by creating space, not topping damage charts. Coordinate with guild leadership on choke points and timing pushes after enemy healers burn resources.
Recommended Job Freedom path: level as Mage or Gunslinger, accumulate zeny and base levels, then swap to Knight with free stat resets. Your shared gear inventory should hold both farming weapons and GvG sword/shield sets. Review all roles on the all classes overview before your first swap.
