Ragnarok: The New World launches with seven fully playable classes, each tracing a classic Ragnarok Online job line from first job through second job advancement. Every class can level, farm, join MVPs, and participate in PvP/GvG. What makes ROW unique is Job Freedom: one character can eventually switch between all seven classes without creating alts, and stat or skill resets are free when you change jobs.
This overview summarizes each class at a glance—combat role, current tier rating, free-to-play viability, and recommended playstyle—then points you to dedicated build guides for stat allocation, skill trees, and gear progression. Whether you are picking your first main or planning a mid-game class swap, start here before diving into individual guides.
Gunslinger — Ranged Burst DPS (S Tier)
Gunslingers are ranged physical damage dealers built around firearm and shuriken swapping. They excel at MVP burst, kiting dangerous bosses, and maintaining high uptime on single-target damage. Early access players consistently rank Gunslinger as the top MVP race class because mobility tools let you reposition without losing DPS. F2P viability is high relative to other physical classes. Continue to the Gunslinger build guide for weapon swap rotations and MVP hunting tips.
Mage / Wizard — Magic AoE (S Tier)
Mages become Wizards who control the fastest leveling curve in ROW. Fire Wall lets you pull and burn entire mob packs safely, while Meteor Storm and Storm Gust provide burst for MVPs and minibosses. Magic damage scales with INT and ignores much of the early physical defense meta. Very high F2P viability makes Wizard the default recommendation for new players. See the Mage build guide for element choices and farming routes.
Swordsman / Knight — Tank and Melee DPS (A Tier)
Swordsmen advance into Knights with Bowling Bash, Pierce, and defensive passives that define GvG frontlines. Knights absorb pressure, disrupt enemy formations, and still farm competently once weapon refine and AGI investment arrive. PvP performance keeps Swordsman in A tier even when Wizards outpace them in raw leveling. Read the Swordsman build guide for Vit versus Str debates and GvG builds.
Archer / Hunter — Safe Ranged Farmer (A Tier)
Archers become Hunters with three popular directions: ADL auto-attack spam, Trapper area control, and Falconer pet damage. Hunters farm from maximum range, making them the safest solo class for dangerous maps. They contribute strong MVP chip damage and excel in open-world exploration. Compare all three paths in the Archer / Hunter build guide.
Acolyte / Priest — Healer and Battle Support (A Tier)
Acolytes become Priests with powerful heals, resurrections, buffs, and party-wide utility. Every organized group wants at least one Priest for dungeons, MVPs, and GvG. Battle Priest builds sacrifice some healing output for Holy/light magic AoE farming, giving solo players a hybrid option. Full support and battle paths are covered in the Acolyte / Priest build guide.
Thief / Assassin — Crit Burst Melee (B Tier)
Thieves become Assassins specializing in critical hits, poison, and cloaked burst combos. Reaching 193 ASPD with crit gear transforms Assassin into a PvP monster, but the leveling phase is slower than magic or ranged classes. Medium F2P viability—budget players need patience. Study crit scaling in the Thief / Assassin build guide.
Merchant / Blacksmith — Economy and Cart DPS (B Tier)
Merchants become Blacksmiths with stall access, forging bonuses, and late-game Cart Revolution or Mech combat options. Merchants control the player economy through vending and crafting while Blacksmiths join endgame DPS once cart skills unlock. Medium F2P viability because zeny generation offsets gear costs. Plan your hybrid merchant/combat route in the Merchant build guide.
Job Freedom — One Character, Every Class
Job Freedom means your account progression—base level, gear, cards, pets, and account-wide unlocks—stays on one character while your active job changes. Switching classes resets your stats and skills for free, letting you reallocate points for the new role. Practical workflow: level as Mage or Gunslinger, bank zeny and gear, then swap to Swordsman for guild war or Priest for raid support. Check the class tier list for current meta rankings before each swap.
