Why Plan Refine Costs First
Refining is the fastest way to increase combat power in Ragnarok: The New World — and the fastest way to burn zeny if you yolo upgrades without a budget. Each refine level demands more ores, higher zeny fees, and from +5 upward introduces meaningful break risk unless you use protection items. The Refine Cost Planner totals expected material consumption between your current refine level and your target level, including average breakage when protection is not used.
Players ask three questions daily: How much will +10 cost? Should I stop at safe +5? Is aiming for +15 cheaper during discount events? This tool answers those before you touch the blacksmith NPC. Read Refine & RNG Systems for probability intuition and Safe Refinement +15 for breakpoint mechanics.
Using the Planner Interface
Current Refine Level — the level on your gear today. Target Refine Level — your realistic goal (+7 budget weapon, +10 main hand, +15 endgame piece). The planner supports stepping in single increments up to the published safe-cap discussion (+15 in standard ROW seasons).
Select equipment tier if the UI offers weapon versus armor toggles — armor refines often cost different ore types. Enable Use Protection when you intend to buy or craft anti-break stones; disable it to see raw gambling averages. The output shows Estimated Material Cost in ore units and translated zeny, plus optional "worst luck" multiples so you can keep emergency funds.
Understanding RNG Averages
Refine RNG is not uniform luck — failure rates climb at high levels. The planner uses community-verified rates (documented in our refine guide video companion) to compute expected attempts, not guaranteed attempts. You might hit +8 in three clicks or pity-break twice at +6; budgeting means preparing for the mean plus a buffer.
Safe refinement milestones (+5, +10, +15 in many seasons) reset break anxiety at specific stops. If the planner shows +9 costing more than jumping to +10 with a guaranteed safe ticket from an event, wait for that event. Track live banners on Current Events and redeem ore bundles from All Redeem Codes before spending cash shop currency.
Cost Optimization Strategies
Prioritize weapon over armor for DPS classes until +7; survival pieces matter more for Knights and Priests tanking MVPs. Refine during discount weekends when ore fees drop 10–30%. Never refine without spare sets — keep a backup weapon so a break does not lock you out of farming the materials to replace it.
Sync with market prices. When ore floors crash after a new farming map releases, the planner's zeny column may overestimate — mentally apply a discount. Merchants running stall arbitrage should check Merchant Build for flipping strategies. If refine costs push you toward a different weapon type entirely, simulate overall DPS per zeny in the Class Switch Planner.
From Spreadsheet to Blacksmith
Workflow we recommend: (1) Plan target in this tool. (2) Farm materials on maps listed in Daily Routine. (3) Buy only the deficit from stalls. (4) Refine in one session to avoid impulse clicks. (5) Log actual results to compare with estimates — if you are consistently unlucky, your protection toggle was probably off.
High refine is optional for story content; do not let +15 social pressure ruin your economy. Many veteran players sit on +7 weapon / +5 armor until first job advancement payoffs. Beginners should finish Beginner First Impressions before touching risky +8 attempts.
