Class Switch & Build Comparison Planner

Purpose of the Class Switch Planner

Choosing a class in Ragnarok: The New World is a long-term commitment — weapons, cards, costumes, and refine ores do not always transfer cleanly when you pivot. The Class Switch Planner displays every class in a comparison table with role, tier standing, F2P viability, and summary strengths so you can answer: Should I reroll from Merchant to Mage? Is Gunslinger still S-tier for my playstyle? Which alt class shares gear with my Hunter?

Unlike scattered forum opinions, this tool pulls from the same data backbone as our Tier List and All Classes Overview, updated when patches shift meta. Use it before burning a name change ticket or buying a class-locked costume from an event shop.

How to Compare Classes

Open the planner and select up to three classes in the comparison slots. The table highlights Role (Ranged DPS, Magic AoE, Tank, Support, Economy), Tier (S/A/B for current season PvE and general content), and F2P Viability (how comfortably free players reach endgame milestones).

Read the summary blurbs for playstyle fit — not just raw tier letters. Gunslinger ranks S for early MVP burst but demands aim and kiting. Mage offers fastest leveling via Fire Wall and Meteor Storm but struggles with SP costs until gear matures. Swordsman/Knight brings PvP control; Acolyte/Priest secures every party slot. Thief/Assassin is PvP-flavored with high ASPD ceiling. Merchant/Blacksmith wins long economies. Match this to your available playtime and guild role before switching.

When to Switch — Decision Framework

Switch early (before level 40) if you dislike basic mechanics — ranged versus melee, support versus DPS. Costs are mostly quest time. Switch midgame (40–70) only if your guild needs a role and you have event gear boxes to catch up. Switch late (70+) is expensive; consider an alt character instead of deleting progress.

Ask four questions: (1) Does my guild need my new role? (2) Can I reuse +refine gear or cards? (3) Will I enjoy the daily farming loop? (4) Does the new class need stats I cannot reset cheaply? If two answers are "no," stay put and read specialized guides like All Classes & Builds to optimize your current path.

Alt Characters vs Full Reroll

ROW encourages alts for crafting, stall mules, and MVP timers. The planner helps pick an alt that complements your main — Priest alt for self-buffs on a DPS main, Merchant alt for zeny, Mage alt for speed leveling vouchers. Shared account cosmetics make alts fashionable without duplicate gacha pulls.

Full reroll makes sense when a class is fundamentally nerfed below B-tier for your content type (ranked PvP, mythic MVPs, etc.). Watch patch notes via Current Events. After a buff patch, tier shifts may justify switching into a class — not just away from one.

Integrating With Other Tools

After narrowing candidates, dive into build pages: Archer / Hunter, Mage, Swordsman, and others for stat templates. Physical classes should run hypothetical gear through the ASPD Calculator. Everyone pays refine taxes — budget in the Refine Cost Planner.

New players should still complete Getting Started on their first character before alt sprawl. First impressions matter — see Beginner First Impressions for honest early-game pacing. The planner is a decision support tool, not a mandate to chase S-tier every season.

Select a class to compare Role Tier F2P Viability Summary
Gunslinger Ranged DPS S High Early MVP king with high mobility and weapon swapping.
Mage / Wizard Magic AoE S Very High Fastest leveling through Fire Wall and Meteor Storm combos.
Swordsman / Knight Tank / DPS A High Strong in PvP and GvG with Bowling Bash and crowd control.
Archer / Hunter Ranged DPS A High Safe solo farming with ADL, Trapper, or Falconer builds.
Acolyte / Priest Support / Healer A High Party essential with Battle Priest AoE farming option.
Thief / Assassin Melee Burst B Medium PvP focused with Crit Assassin reaching 193 ASPD.
Merchant / Blacksmith Economy / DPS B Medium Stall monopoly and late-game Cart or Mech DPS.

Job Freedom lets you switch between all seven classes on one character with free stat and skill resets. Use this table to plan your first main class and future switches.
